Concerning USAID’s Shutdown and Your Disregard For Human Suffering
Dear Janice,
Before we explore the lack of depth in this argument, I would like to make this very clear.
The Ugandan people who directly benefit from and would be devastated by the U.S. funding freeze / USAID’s shutdown are not those who are like you, I, or any other who have the time and opportunity to go on social media and voice our thoughts.
These people are “voiceless.” Many of them struggle to even earn about 6000ugx (~$1.6) per month!! Many survive on subsistence faming and the good will of others such as their familial relations for basic survival.
It is not uncommon for them to choose between having lunch or dinner. They cannot have both, apart from the rare occasions when they get a ripe jackfruit or anything that can fill them up for the day.
Often times though, they rely on boiled cassava and water to get them through their days because they cannot even afford other proper meals.
We shouldn’t forget that they are still people. They often dream of greener pastures and once in a while, they’ll find someone who will promise them this life.
In cases where some of these are young girls, it is this pursuit that often finds them stuck in the jaws of predators. They…
